Avira, a German company founded in 1986 celebrates their 30 years in the industry this year. They have over 483 million installations globally so the product is definitely a hit in the market. They seem to concentrate on providing a free service which could explain the reason for the immense number of installs. They’ve been on the scene for a while but only recently come out of their shell, so to speak. In 2012 they were considered the 6th largest antivirus vendor, with over 100 million users.

Again, when comparing free and paid plans you’ll obviously see a difference but this time we honestly feel the free version will suffice for any average user. It includes real-time scanning, quarantine management and an integrated scheduler! The extra features you get in the paid version might be handy but when talking about purely antivirus they don’t provide you with much more at all, you’ll get the standard bonus features like email protection and extra protection but in reality are these actually needed? We think no, as a lot people will be running 3rd party firewalls and anti-spam software already. Obviously if you are lacking in such areas, the paid version could be for you.
Avira, with 30 years of experience really do develop some beautiful apps. Obviously when it comes down to antivirus software it’s far from only down to design but performance too. Avira don’t slack here either, often scoring 100% or very close on malware detection tests. The user interface is very simple, perfect for the standard user, although when getting stuck in with the settings you can easily make the software run just as you like.
No live chat! Not a good start from Avira when it comes to support. Live chat via a company's website is pretty much essential nowadays, we found it speeds resolutions up and as a result keeps the customer happy! So not having implemented this system is definitely a negative. However ‘Hire an expert’ pretty much replaces the live-chat idea, it’s an innovative idea which allows a customer to find a support expert and ask them a direct question. We found experts from a couple of different locations, Germany being the primary one - they are a German company after all! A lot of these experts can speak English anyway so it shouldn’t take you too long to find a solution to your problem!
Avira tend to promote their free version more than any other product they sell and so naturally most of their users are running the free solution. This makes it difficult to put a value on the suite, but obviously if you aren’t paying anything it’s got unlimited value and this makes it awesome! Avira do offer a paid version with more features for $44.99 for 1 user per year. This isn’t the best valued antivirus on the market but is it really all about the money? When considering the amount of experience, design and features we believe the product is actually pretty much on par with other companies, you may pay more but the features and fundamentals are immense!
